The Lions of Chinatown

Delivered.

Mask of the Zodiac.

The Lions of Chinatown follows Sara Lai, a young woman who has been training for five years to become an official member of Hung Ching, The Chinese Freemasons, New York City Chinatown’s most notorious lion dance crew. She is determined to change the face of lion dancing by becoming one of only a few women to play the lion head, a traditionally male role in Chinese culture.

As Chen explains, the project is as much about the importance of keeping cultural traditions alive as it is the changes that need to happen within the culture in order to do that.

Delivered. deals with the experience of delivery workers, many of whom are immigrants, who work a very frontline job. Interviewees speak poignantly about the risks, importance, and invisible struggles of delivery people as they continue to work during the pandemic. Both shorts are excellent pieces which capture realistic, human endeavors during difficult times.

Mask of the Zodiac. Legend has it, the Jade Emperor called upon the twelve Zodiac animals to race across China and deliver a message. Filmmaker Law Chen created a bold, modern interpretation of this story in a Chinese New Year campaign for ICBC, but subsequently released it as a reminder to wear masks to protect our safety.

  • Talking about my journey as a director feels like describing to someone the dream I had last night, it's murky, nonsensical, and I can never remember how I got there. I was born in the US, grew up in China, began making films in the rural outskirts of Beijing, went to Duke University for engineering, became a commercial director at BBDO NY, directed a robot Sci-Fi action movie in China, and now am writing and directing my own feature. I find it difficult to connect the dots because everyone's journey in the creative world is a unique, meandering path. And no matter where you've been, the question always is, where do I go from here? Especially now, while sheltering in place during the pandemic in NYC, there is seemingly nowhere to go.

Law Chen is a director from Beijing, China, currently based in New York City. Law’s experience growing up in Eastern and Western cultures continues to be an integral part of his writing and directorial style. As the lead commercial director at BBDO for 7 years, Law garnered multiple awards at film and advertising festivals, including the Cannes Lions, Clios, One Show, Andy’s, NY Festival, and New Director Showcase. He recently completed the China episode for the docu-series ‘Rotten’ on Netflix and is developing a scripted series with Justin Lin/YOMYOMF. He hopes to continue directing cross-cultural projects that tell stories about the diversity of the human experience.
